While songwriters George and Ira Gershwin had stellar individual careers, they will be forever remembered as the team who helped define the sounds and styles of the jazz age, and who then elevated musical theatre to an American art form. From their 1924 Broadway hit, LADY, BE GOOD, until George's untimely death in 1937, the brothers composed over two dozen scores for Broadway and Hollwood. The Gershwin catalogue includes Porgy and Bess, Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, along with such standards as I Got Rhythm, Someone to Watch Over Me, and The Man I Love.
We will be treated to the song stylings of some of the area's finest singers--Leslie Fitzwater, Becky Spice, Matt McNabb, and Tommy Lueck. They'll be joined on stage by our Rising Star, Emily Pogorelc. Music Director Paula Foley Tillen will once again be on piano, Jim Ryan on drums, while Susan Loveridge and Mark Salentine will provide a few stories about these iconic brothers who made such a lasting impact on the American songbook.
